Chicana Falsa

Chicana Falsa by Michele Serros is a combination of poetry and fiction. I really enjoyed reading this novel because it was short and entertaining. Michele Serros describes her life growing up in Los Angeles and struggling to find her true identity. She has to deal with stereotypes and not being considered a real Chicana because of the way she speaks. She wanted to become a writer at a young age but some of  her family members and neighbors didn't  believe she could become a writer because there weren't many Latina writers during that time and she didn't get good grades in English.
Her mother was the only person who supported her dream and encouraged her to continue writing. This was her first novel which she dedicated to her mother after she died, because even though her family was poor her mother spent all the money she saved to buy her a desk where she could write her stories. She struggled to find something to write about but then realizes her life was the perfect story to tell.

  1. I love books like these because they are motivational to read especially coming from a Hispanic background. These books are the best because everyone can relate to their story in their own personal way.

  2. Although this novel may be fiction I would think that the situations and problems presented in it is not much far away from the truth. This reminds me of a novel called Always Running which was a narrative novel about life as a Hispanic male in the "ghettos". I believe this novel is a impacting influence on our current generation be cause we are more familiar with these kinds of topics as opposed to Shakespeare. This novel seems interesting I will give it a read. Thanks for the post.

  3. I think each person has their own personal story that drives them, and with each of these stories makes for interesting texts. The mother sacrificing everything to give her daughter a desk to write on is extremely inspirational, as most of us are blessed with the ability to write, read, and use language at our own will, but fail to utilize it to its full potential. Others struggle to make this a reality in their lives.

  4. I think it's wonderful that her mother sacrifcied so much and supported her in making her dream come true. Having that kind of support in life is priceless and it's something that we all want to have. It's amazing how her mother was mostly the one to make all the difference in her life just by support and believing in her daughter. This shows not only that the mother was a great mother, but that she wanted nothing more than to see her daughter succeed and be happy.
